What Happens at Your First General Podiatry Appointment
- We ask about the problem, your general health, any medications and the shoes you usually wear.
- We examine your feet, skin and nails and look at how footwear and walking may be contributing.
- We explain what we've found in plain language, along with your treatment options and costs.
- Where it's appropriate, we start treatment straight away, such as reducing a painful corn or thickened nail.
- You leave with a plan covering home care, footwear and whether a follow-up visit is needed.
Senior Podiatry & Preventative Foot Care on the Gold Coast
Feet change as we age. The cushioning under the heels and balls of the feet gets thinner, toenails often thicken and become harder to cut, and skin can become more fragile. Stiff joints, arthritis or changes in eyesight can also make it hard to reach your feet and trim your nails safely.
Our senior podiatry appointments are thorough, gentle and unhurried. You'll find us at the Eighth Avenue shops in Palm Beach, with easy access and parking close by.
Why Regular Podiatry Care Matters as You Age
- Safer nail and skin care: cutting thick toenails or trimming corns at home can lead to cuts and infection. We use sterilised instruments to care for your nails, corns and hard skin safely.
- Footwear and steadiness: painful corns or worn, unsupportive shoes can change the way you walk and may affect your balance. We check your everyday shoes, how stable your feet are and how comfortable your joints feel. That way you can keep walking with confidence.
- Diabetes foot checks: if you have diabetes, regular foot checks are an important part of looking after your health. Read more about our diabetes foot assessments.
- Ongoing care you can plan around: many older patients book regular maintenance appointments, often every 6 to 10 weeks, to keep nails and skin comfortable. Family members and carers are welcome to come along.
If you have a chronic health condition, ask your GP whether a care plan applies to you. We also see DVA clients.
Corn, Callus & Plantar Wart Treatment
Corns and calluses build up where footwear, walking or foot shape create repeated pressure. Corn and callus treatment involves carefully removing the built-up skin to ease pressure and discomfort. Because they tend to come back if the cause stays the same, we'll also look at why they're forming. We may suggest footwear changes, padding or, where appropriate, orthotics.
If you have diabetes, please don't cut corns yourself or use medicated corn pads. See a podiatrist instead, and read about our diabetes podiatry care.
Plantar warts are caused by a virus (HPV) and can be painful to walk on. They're sometimes mistaken for corns, so our plantar wart treatment starts with confirming what the lesion is. We'll then explain the treatment options available at the clinic and how many visits may be needed.
Fungal & Thickened Toenail Treatment
Fungal nail infections can leave toenails discoloured, thick and crumbly. Treatment takes patience because the affected nail has to grow out. Oral antifungal medicine often takes 3 to 6 months or longer, and the nail can look abnormal for months afterwards.
Our fungal nail treatment is designed to make the nail more comfortable and support healthy regrowth. Depending on your situation, it may include reducing and thinning the nail, topical treatment advice, and tips on shoes and socks to lower the risk of reinfection.
Routine Toenail Care
If cutting your own toenails has become difficult or painful, we can look after routine nail cutting, thickened nails and nail edges that press into the skin. For an ingrown toenail that keeps coming back, ingrown toenail surgery may be an option. Our podiatrists work closely with local GPs and surgeons when further care is needed.

General Podiatry FAQs
Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist?
No. You can book directly. If you have a chronic condition, your GP may be able to set up a care plan that gives you a partial Medicare rebate.
Do you bulk bill?
No. We accept GP care plans, but you pay the full fee on the day and receive a partial Medicare rebate.
Is podiatry covered by Medicare?
Only in some cases. If you have a chronic condition, your GP may refer you on a care plan, which gives you a partial Medicare rebate for a set number of visits each year. We don't bulk bill, so you pay the full fee on the day and claim the rebate.
Can I claim my private health insurance on the day?
Yes. Bring your health fund card and you can claim at the clinic.
Will you treat my foot problem at the first appointment?
In most cases, yes. After assessing your feet, we can usually start treatment on the same day if it's appropriate.
Should I see a general podiatrist or a sports podiatrist?
If your foot pain started with running, training or sport, our sports podiatry service is likely the better fit. For skin, nail and everyday foot problems, start with general podiatry. If you're unsure, call us and we'll point you in the right direction.
I have a foot problem but I'm not sure which appointment to book. What should I do?
Book a standard initial consultation online, or call us on 07 5598 2559 and our team can help. Your podiatrist will assess the problem at your first visit and, if a specialised service such as sports podiatry or orthotics may be a better fit, they’ll explain why and what the next steps are.
